RARA-AVIS: Ross Macdonald

It may interest members of this list that Ross Macdonald's biographer, Tom Nolan, has discovered a quite a few Lew Archer fragments in the Millar papers -- beginnings of stories, chapters, and so on. I have read them, and they are very good -- not barrel scraping. Macdonald must have discarded them because they weren't taking stories in a direction he wished, not because they were badly written.

There's a good chance that Crippen & Landru will publish them next year in an augmented THE NAME IS ARCHER collection, which will include all the stories in LEW ARCHER: PRIVATE INVESTIGATOR and STRANGERS IN TOWN.

Incidentally, due in about 3 weeks is Tom Nolan's edition of Margaret Millar's THE COUPLE NEXT DOOR: COLLECTED SHORT MYSTERIES. Millar was, as most of you know, Ross Macdonald's wife.
