When I first discovered Macdonald's work, more than forty years ago now, I found his books compulsively readable. I couldn't get enough of them. I believe that in one of his reviews Anthony Boucher said that Macdonald's plots pulled the reader along like "a fishook in the mind." Or maybe I made that up.
