Has the idea of GATSBY as a PI novel already been explored? I
am giving a paper on that topic at the Eighth International
F. Scott Fitzgerald Conference on Long Island this April, and
I would look pretty silly if I discussed the idea without at
least acknowledging earlier scholarship... of which I have
found little.

I think if you look, any story dealing with secrets with the
past, sins of the father, in the PI format, you can look to
two things. Ross MacDonald and THE GREAT GATSBY (which of
course influenced MacDonald.)
