Here's a terrific interview with Charles McCarry from a few months back, in which he talks about using writing as a cover for his espionage work:

He also offers a possible answer to Juri's question about Ross Thomas' political affiliation -- assuming, of course, that Thomas was a spy. McCarry says that Langley was "wall-to-wall knee jerk liberals."
