I'm reading Dan Simmons' HARD AS NAILS, his third Joe Kurtz
novel, and I don't remember if anybody has mentioned this
little in-joke. Kurtz is talking to a cop and says:
"My mother was a whore. . . . she told me that she thought my
old man was a professional thief, some guy with just one name
and that not even his own. Not a second-story guy but a real
hardcase who would set up serious jobs with bunch of other
pros and then blow town forever. She and he were together for
just a week in the late sixties."
The cop says that the guy must have been setting up some
heist, and Kurtz says, "She said that he never wanted sex
except right *after* a successful job."
Considering his heredity, it's no wonder Kurtz is so
tough.
