They're both. That's the genius of Stout's novels. He merged the traditional "great detective" of the Christie/Queen/Sayers tradition (Wolfe) with the hard-boiled PI in the BLACK MASK style (Archie) in a partnership that shouldn't have worked, but did for more than 40 years.
