Agreed. But the similarities are striking. Even the vocal
inflections and nuances in the way some of the actors' lines
are spoken and the camera angles are near-perfect
match-ups.
Which leads me to believe the oft-repeated story that Huston
did the screenplay by having his secretary type out the book,
sans exposition, is pure horse hockey. It looks more like he
just dusted off the original screenplay, and restored the
book's ending.
And there's a pretty steamy (for the times) scene Huston
didn't film that's in the first flick, where it's suggested
Spade strip searches Brigid.
But Huston's version sure shows that remakes can indeed be
worth watching, and even surpass the original.
See ya in Toronto, folks. This bird has almost flown. And if
you're going down Bouchercon way, be sure to catch "ISLAND OF
TERROR: THINGS I WISH I KNEW BEFORE I WAS PUBLISHED" with Sam
Reaves (Domenic Martell), Ruthe Furie, me and moderator P.J.
Parrish at 2 pm Thursday.
