RARA-AVIS: "You imbecile! You bloated idiot!"

Just under the wire, I watched John Huston's 1941 THE MALTESE FALCON to go with Falcon month. What a movie! I've probably seen it a dozen times but I never stop enjoying it. This time I particularly enjoyed hearing Spade's dialogue, still fresh in my mind from the book, spoken by Bogart, who made it all sound perfect and could speak incredibly fast when he wanted. Also seeing Greenstreet as Gutman, which is one of the great performances, especially in Gutman's first meeting Spade ("I'm a man who likes talking to a man who likes to talk") and when they discover the bird is a fake and Gutman is on the verge of collapsing, but recovers and starts to laugh.

A few years ago I asked about the bed in Spade's apartment and where it goes. We see it at the start of the movie, when Spade's woken up with the call that Archer's dead, and a few minutes later when Dundy and Polhaus come to talk to him. Later, it's gone. I think it's a Murphy bed, and for the rest of the movie it's stored back in the wall, while a sofa is out for people (Brigid) to sit on. The bed's disappearance was one of those little details that nagged at me, but now it's solved.
