Richard Price's New Jersey trilogy - Clockers, Freedomland and Samaritan - is pretty epic. As, I seem to dimly remember , is another New Jersey noir, Shane Stevens' Dead City.

John (who has written four books with interlocking charcters and a constant setting - Cardiff - but would barely describe them as hardboiled, and defintely never epic).
