RARA-AVIS: ADMIN: Why are new members moderated?

From: William Denton ( buff@pobox.com)

I just updated the welcome message with a note about this: new members to the list are, by default, moderated. They can't post without it being approved by the list-owner (me). Every time a new person posts, however, I make them unmoderated, and after that they can post freely.

This was mentioned in some discussion when we moved over here to Yahoo. I wanted to make it clear why some people are moderated and others not. Doing this is an added level of protection against spammers. If you join and lurk for a while, to get the hang of the list, then post, there'll be a short delay before your message appears. It's nothing personal. I'll approve it very soon and then you'll be all set.

Bill
