RARA-AVIS: Library Presentation on Eliot Ness

From: JIM DOHERTY ( jimdohertyjr@yahoo.com)
Date: 22 Sep 2004

For those of you who live in the Chicago or Milwaukee metro areas, I'm giving a talk on Eliot Ness's real-life hunt for the Depression-era serial killer known as the Mad Butcher of Kingsbury Run. It's this Saturday, Sept 25, at the Zion/Benton Public Library in Zion, IL, just south of the Wisconsin border. The presentation starts at 2PM. More information on the can be found here:

http://www.zblibrary.org/events/adult.html

In recent years, this case has been fictionalized in a number of different mediums. Max Allan Collins and John Peyton Cooke have written novels about it. Brian Michael Bendis wrote and illustrated a graphic novel
(a comic book on steroids for those of you not up on the latest publishing jargon). Peter Ullian wrote a stage play about the case and later adapted that play into a musical. Even the recent revived UNTOUCHABLES TV series, syndicated to local station in the early
'90's, did a two-part episode loosely inspired by the murders.

The case was never solved officially, but years after he retired, Ness privately claimed that he'd successfully identified the Butcher and, in fact, had put him out of commission. This presentation will examine how much merit there might have been to Ness's claims.

The library is located at 2400 Gabriel Ave in Zion. The phone number for further information is
(847)872-4680, ext 4.

Hope to see some of you there.

JIM DOHERTY
