Thought I'd mention, since no one else was too likely, that the title of Thom Andersen's documentary is, indeed, taken from the 1970s gay porn film directed by Fred Halsted: "L.A. Plays Itself." (Ou sont les pornos d'antan ...)

Here's a link to an article about the Andersen which goes into a bit more detail. Dig, too, the description further down the page of gritty Los Angeles docu-drama "The Savage Eye." Written by the guy (Ben Maddow) who wrote the script for "The Asphalt Jungle," in case you're interested.
