I'm wondering if anyone can suggest some good heavy noir
books, collections, or stories. I've read a bunch of Vachss
and Ian Rankin and am looking for something a bit
darker.

wanted to branch out a bit in your search for darkness, you
could try Crane's MAGGIE. I would add Faulkner's SANCTUARY to
the list. SANCTUARY is a cornerstone of Southern Gothic, a
delightful noir subgenre.
