I haven't read O'Connell's stuff, but if you are just looking for something wickedly dark, maybe James Ellroy's THE BLACK DAHLIA would fill the bill, and if you don't mind going back a few years, one of my all-time favorites is William Lindsay Gresham's NIGHTMARE ALLEY, written in 1946. If you feel like experimenting, read Stephen Crane's MAGGIE. It's short, but not exactly sweet.
