RARA-AVIS: Purple Noon

I accidentally* saw this movie via Netflix last night. I'd been meaning to read some Highsmith since her books were discussed here last year, and this certainly was interesting. The bright lighting and scenic tours around Italy keep it from being noir, according to definitions this non-film buff has been reading here, but to me the "Three Coins in the Fountain"/"Roman Holiday" look of the movie made the plot points more startling by contrast.
(I wonder whether this contrast is unintentional or purposeful.) We also remarked on its odd gorelessness, which may or may not tie in with the sunny scenery.
