Just remember this:
"Hard-boiled" means "tough and colloquial."
"Noir" means "dark and sinister."

It also has ads, and I (and many others) think that Yahoo sells information about members to spammers. If you had asked, I would have suggested that we move the list to my server, where it's free and there are no ads. It's also just as easy for people to use. The only drawback is that there is no place for members to share files, or set up polls. I haven't seen members do either one on the list so far.

Additionally, you may find the 'preferences' in your 'Yahoo profile' are altered to generate spam when Yahoogroups 'upgrades' the service. I'm sure there are several rara-avians who would've been able to set up a mailing-list on a spam-free university-hosted majordomo or listserv too. Still, we're here now ... but we can always hop on a box-car if we need to ...

Bill,
I learned a few things after starting the Hardluck Stories group on Yahoo. First, you want to moderate all new members, otherwise you're going to end up with spammers who troll these groups. Second, you better have Norton antivirus (or some similar product) installed, because I got a daily flood of messages containing viruses after starting my group.

Hello,
There is a simplier virus solution. All you need to do is to turn off attachments. I don't recall ever being able to send an attachment to Rara-Avis so that shouldn't be a problem. If you need to be able to get files, there is an upload option on the web site. Better option overall. No one is stuck downloading it as they are with an attachment. Each user can choose to download the file or not. However, that too has been abused by some spammers as a way to get their messages posted.

Thanks, I made that change. As to viruses, attachments are not allowed on the list, as before, but since Yahoo strips them off for us, people won't have to fiddle with their mail program and suffer annoying messages from me telling them to stop with the HTML attachments.

B&N nearby was tossing their remainders of these for a dollar apiece, and thus I caught up with these two-or-so-yo releases...Westlake's non-series item (iinm) was rather like a less frantic Dortmunder, with some perhaps easy digs at the Feds, but not too distracting for their easiness. The Amos Walker novel had some more melodramatic flair, but perhaps as a result came off as more cartoonish, somehow...anyone else prefer LE's westerns?
For Westlake's overblown kiss-off to SF among other items of interest (I can't get enough of Avram Davidson's casual writing, myself), I can recommend Pat and Dick (aka Richard) Lupoff's newish THE BEST OF XERO, an antho out of their early-'60s fanzine that was one of the inspirations for 'zine-publishing comics fandom, as well as a source of pioneering pop-culture assessment of other types (James Blish on writing for CAPTAIN VIDEO is another highlight; a very young Ed Gorman writes a bit about superhero comics and what they don't do for him; a similarly youthful Roger Ebert writes bad imitation e.e. cummings poetry, which is well-illustrated by the once Silvia White.)
These have been my hardcover delving of the last week or so.
Hey, Bill Denton: Losing this banner above the posting field might be a good idea (but, of course, it's your ball):

That's just for new members, as recommended by Mr. Zeltserman to keep out trolling spammers. It'll affect all the rest of the folks who swing over from the old home, who are new to the new list, but after some unspecified time which I can't find in Yahoo's help, you and they can post without trouble. I don't want to moderate the list, and there's certainly no need.

Chees,

This finally came out on DVD and I watched it last weekend. Superb movie. Noir without the sometimes overworked camera angles and dark and gloom. I noticed that Household (right?) wrote the screenplay as well as the book it was adapted from, BUILD MY GALLOWS HIGH. If I recall correctly, the title of the book never appears in the novel text, but he did manage to work it into the screen text.
Congratulations on the new location for rara-avis, Bill. I'm gearing up for Hammett month in September. I just finished THE GLASS KEY and if I can get through THE THIN MAN, I'll have all of Hammett's novels under my belt.

I did read this one about a year ago. It's a fun read, or yarn. For some reason, it reminded me of Leonard. The dialogue has the same spontaneity and it's funny without beeing goofy (as it is in the Dortmunder series).
Best,
MrT

Actually, my experience as a group-owner is that, with that setting, you have to go in and turn off moderation separately for each legitimate member. You go into "Members," then select "Edit" by the member's name, then select "Edit" next to "Posting Messages" under "Membership Privileges."
If someone knows an easier way, I'm all ears.

miker, there's a great post on OUT OF THE PAST here:
http://blogs.salon.com/0003139/2004/07/13.html#a531
and another one here:
http://vincekeenan.com/
and here's Roger Ebert's take:
http://www.suntimes.com/ebert/greatmovies/outofthepast.html
Here's a key paragraph from Ebert: But the critic Jeff Schwager read all versions of the screenplay for a 1990 Film Comment article, and writes me: "Mainwaring's script was not very good, and in one draft featured awful voice-over narration by the deaf-mute. Cain's script was a total rewrite and even worse; it was totally discarded. The great dialogue was actually the work of Frank Fenton, a B-movie writer whose best known credit was John Ford's 'Wings of Eagles.'"

I picked up a movie tie-in edition of Lawrence Block's DEADLY HONEYMOON (1967). Dack Rambo was on the cover, but I bought it anyway. It looks like a good one, and a review or two I saw online said it was a solid thriller. What's the word on it? I haven't read any of Block's non-series stuff, and little outside of the Matt Scudder series, but I know his early writing is well respected here. (Whether or not the pseudonymous pornography is included with this, I don't know.)

Solid thriller about sums it up. For me, it didn't hold up all that well. It didn't grip me or convince me the way some of his work does, for example, his masterpiece The Girl with the Long Green Heart.
This should not stop you from reading it, though. With Block, the technique is always in top form.

I agree with Mario here. Although worth reading, Deadly Honeymoon is, in my mind, the least of the early Blocks I've read. The psychology just didn't hold up for me, particularly at the end. Gores, in particular, is so much better in dealing with the aftermath of a situation like this.
I'm also with Mario that Girl with the Long Green Heart is possibly the best of early Block.

Leonard and Westlake are often easily mistakeable for each other, I'd say, and the laid-back nature of LID is reminiscent of Leonard, without EL's occasional flaw of straining for hipness. (As opposed to the occasional clownishness you notice in DW.)
Your Yahoo identity doesn't give your name, Mario (at least on the webpage for RA)...soon you might become as anonymous as Mark or myself, particularly to new folk.

Having been a silent witness for some time, I think its time I got a little vocal. I must admit I am more into facts about writers and their books, like pseudonyms of which I have a rather large database, so forgive me if I prefer to read rather than argue.
Anyway, Davis Dresser. Not really a post themed question I suppose, but can anyone confirm that in the 1930s he wrote 'After passion' as Jerome Shard? Only source is the Library of Congress, so I would love to hear if anyone can offer more evidence.

If you're going to Bouchercon, but still haven't arranged a place to stay, contact me off-list if you're willing to share a room with two other guys.
It's at a downtown Toronto hotel (Travelodge) less than a mile from the convention venue, and would run a bit more than $30 a night if we shared.
Hope to hear from someone.
