While I liked Vian's book a bit better than you (though I
definitely don't think it's a classic), I've got to agree
that no American would have been fooled for an instant by the
claim it was translated from a US original.
However, I'm with Bill that you should check out Manchette
before writing off the French and I'd add Leo Malet as well
worth checking out.
