Possible spoiler about Laura and/or Twin Peaks
Jim, like you, I immediately thought of Laura in terms of
that plot point. By the late '80s, it had long been such a
cliche that I kept waiting for it to be revealed that Twin
Peak's Laura Palmer (who had many echoes of the movie Laura)
was not really dead (even though she was clearly seen
"wrapped in plastic"), that it was going to turn out she and
her cousin had switched places (relying on another cliche). I
guess that's how cliches can be used anew, flip them and go
against the assumption. However, that quickly becomes a
cliche, too.
