RE: RARA-AVIS: Kurosawa and English subtitles: Robison

From: Michael Robison Yojimbo looked like the one that I think has been referred to as an adaptation of RED HARVEST. There was another called Ran. Can I get a decent understanding of the movies reading English subtitles?

--While I don't speak more than a few phrases of Japanese (and those badly), I would say yes. Particularly if you do get the Criterions or other decently subtitled items, rather than some of the earlier, public-domain prints from the '50s/'60s with washed-out white subtitles, of both RASHOMON and THE SEVEN SAMURAI particularly. HIGH AND LOW, which I mentioned in response to Mario, is (of course) based on an Ed McBain novel, only adapted to then-contemporary Japan. Not as good as his best historicals, but interesting enough.
