A classic scene we've all read many times is when the hero

************* That's a fact. Chandler got a lot of mileage
out of knockouts, didn't he? Marlowe gets bopped twice in
FAREWELL, MY LOVELY and slips off into the proverbial
blackness. How about the record number of knockouts for one
guy in a story or novel? I think Mr. Kells in Paul Cain's
FAST ONE, going down three times, is the most I can think
of.
It's my impression that a lot of contemporary hardboiled
writers try to avoid the well-worn cliche nowadays. Am I
wrong about this?
