Joseph Wambaugh's first book, THE NEW CENTURIONS
(1970?), is about the experiences of three rookie cops during
their first few years on the job. It culminates in the Watts
riots of 1965. Perhaps not quite as much historical
perspective as you might be looking for, but it IS
specifically about that era.
Most of Ellroy's books and at least a few of Mosley's are
actually set in the '50's, by the way.
