Re: RARA-AVIS: Bastard child

Date: 29 Feb 2004

Strangely enough, I've experienced no censure whatsoever for writing first-person about the African-American experience. Quite the opposite.

As to its difficulty, I have to say that our job as writers is to get inside other heads: the arts are as close as we can ever get to that, isolated as we are within our own personalities. As I've said in interviews, were I should only be allowed to write about a middle-aged white man from the South, how boring that would be -- for myself and for my readers.
