RARA-AVIS: Hammett Book Reviews

For Hammett enthusiasts, particularly those who have read and enjoyed his
_Smart Set_ short story (March 1923) "From the Memoirs of a Private Detective," I suggest two book reviews written for _The New York Evening Post_.

June 7, 1930 and July 5, 1930.

In these two "The Crime Wave" columns, Hammett made 24 "suggestions to detective story writers." He noted that following the publication of the first nineteen suggestions (in the June 7 column) he had been approached by a publisher with an offer of $100 "for a slightly more complete list." In the second column, as he did not need the $100 then, he offered five "more suggestions at the mere usual space rate."
