Mark, I suggest _The Heart of the Matter_. In my opinion,
it's Greene's best novel. The story The Basement Room (made
into The Fallen Idol) is also fantastic. It's in his
collected stories, a fat book which shows his full talent and
variety as a writer.
Incidentally, I've just finished Pritchett's collected
stories, about 1/3 of which I had never read. A really and
really good collection. It always takes me a while to warm up
to this writer's ultradetached style, but once in the groove,
his stuff moves.
End of digression.
Best,
MrT
