I'm not even going to try to explain the impact this book had
on me when I first read it, but I do know that it can have a
powerful effect on some people. I picked it up off the
newsstand when it first appeared, and it bowled me over.
Maybe I was just at the right age for it (15 or 16). I let a
friend borrow it (after I'd read it twice), and many years
later he said that after reading it, he couldn't believe I'd
ever let him borrow such a wonderful book. By coincidence,
just today, around 45 or 46 years later, I got an e-mail from
him, saying that he'd just received in yesterday's mail a
copy of the hardcover first edition that he'd bought. He has
a copy of the paperback first, of course, but he'd wanted the
hardback for a long time.
