RARA-AVIS: japanese noir?

Does anyone know anything about any of these books and/or authors?

Ashes by Kenzo Kitakata -- I ran across this while ordering Kirino's Out. Although this is the first English translation, supposedly Kitakata has written over a hundred books. The description says this one is a street level tale of the yakuza.

Battle Royale by Koushun Takami -- this looks like it may fit next month's sci-fi noir theme. It is compared to Clockwork Orange, a brutal tale about young people in a televised fight to the death. The movie stars the young actress who plays Go-Go in Kill Bill. It has also been adapted into a series of Manga.

Almost Transparent Blue by Ryu Murakami -- another youth out of control book.

Anybody know any of these books or authors? Are any worth getting? Any other recommended Japanese writers?

Mark
