Daly only wrote one thing well: "action". Because of that, he was very successful in Black Mask. Shaw was making money.

Daly is a precursor to the trend in cinema called "action movies". Dumb? Yes. Catering to a certain sector of the male crowd? Obviously. Good business? Of course.

If you want to read one of the worst detective novels of all time, get a copy of Daly's _The Hidden Hand_. Everything in it is crude in the extreme, including the plot. Daly makes Spillane look like a writer.
