Undoubtedly (!). And Clandestine is just as good, perhaps a shade better. These two, together with the novella Dick Contino's Blues, are my favorite Ellroys.

I wouldn't call it lack of control, though. He creates this horrid forest and can't resist hacking away at all the brambles that get in his way. It's not clean writing, but it's effective because he illuminates character. Character rather than the history of the era.
