In the movie (the Garfield-Turner version, not the Nicholson-Lange mess), Garfield uses the title line as a sort-of explanation for why he ended up where he was (the death house): he'd gotten away with a real murder, but
"the postman" rang again, nailing him for a murder that was really an accident, thus making it not so unfair that he going to die for something he hadn't done. As I recall, there's none of this talk in the novel.
