This is strange. According to GNOD (Global Network of Dreams) t he most similar writer to Raymond Chandler is Walter Heller ( http://www.globalnetworkofdreams.com/books/related/chandler.php

The most similar to Hammett is Chandler is Tabuchi though Chandler is close as is Bellow. http://www.globalnetworkofdreams.com/books/related/hammett.php The farthest is Tolkien which seems about right. The relationships keep slightly shifting around. It's an interesting site. Mark.
