Subject: Re: RARA-AVIS: Ross Thomas
I was lucky enough to get to do a one-on-one interview
with Ross Thomas at
the Minneapolis Bouchercon around 1987 when he was
guest of honor. I also
got to hang around with him a little during the day of
the interview, but I
didn't join in the poker game that night. Thomas was
part of a regular
poker-playing crowd at Bouchercon in those days, and
I'd have enjoyed
watching him work. I, however, am the world's worst
poker player in more
ways than one. I don't allow myself around a game. But
I digress. Thomas
was a right g, as you'd probably expect. Smart, funny,
and a damned fine
writer.

I had forgotten about those Bouchercon poker games. I very
much regret not participating in one with Ross Thomas. I was
at that Bouchercon but not at the poker tables...or at least
not at the right time. All the cons run together after
awhile. I did join the poker players a few times over the
years. I remember my first evening at it when I looked around
the table at Max Allan Collins, Lawrence Block and Dennis
Lynds (and others lost to memory) and wondered how many hours
of group enjoyment I had from the group. I am just an average
poker player but broke about even. I introduced the variation
known as
"Criss-Cross" or aka "The Iron Cross" to the table to the
enjoyment of Collins who did well at it.
Eventually I stopped going because once the novelty wore off
I realized I could play poker with a bunch of guys back home
but at Bouchercon there were friends to talk to and party
with who would disappear out of my life for the next 12
months. So I stopped going.
