I would suggest something by William Campbell Gault. For
example, his superb noir novel _Death Out of Focus_ was
reprinted in an anthology years ago, but is of course out of
print.
Other names: Malcolm Braly, Lionel White, Charles Williams,
Norbert Davis (someone was going to reprint his three solo
novels, did they?), and yes, Gil Brewer had something, a kind
of contagious fever, that elevated him well above a hack. The
late E. Richard Johnson is totally out of print, I think (IPL
had reissued some of his stuff, but those reissues may be
gone from the catalog, too).

worthies.
