Goines WHORESON. Much better story than Iceberg Slim's PIMP.
There was a complexity and depth in WHORESON that was lacking
in PIMP. I still had a couple complaints about it, though. As
is likely to happen in first person novels, character
development outside of the protagonist suffered. I was also
skeptical of the ending.
A lot of the plot elements matched up with Slim's PIMP.
Dysfunctional family life, rejection of the life of the
9-to-5 factory worker, examination of the sym- biosis between
pimp and prostitute, drugs, alcohol, coat hanger
beatings.
