"It's worth mentioning here that Straight Time is based on
the book of the same name by former FBI most wanted
man-turned cult icon Edward Bunker, and the book in turn was
based on his real life exploits. Bunker is probably known to
most people as the short-lived, Souther Drawl-having Mr. Blue
in Quentin Tarantino's ultra-violent gangster masterpiece
"Reservoir Dogs.""
Another movie whose video release was held up for years in
the UK.
Although the book was reissued in paperback as Straight Time
after the movie came out, Bunker's first novel was
originally, and in its most recent US printing, called No
Beast So Fierce.
The follow-up, the prison novel Animal Factory is also quite
good, both the book and its movie adaptation of the same
name, directed by Steve Buscemi, Mr. Pink in Reservoir
Dogs.
He has also written two other novels, Little Boy Blue and Dog
Eat Dog, and his autobiography, Education of a Felon (in the
US; I think the UK title has Mr. Brown in the title).
And didn't he co-write the screenplay for Runaway
Train?
