I think they were right, and I believe that this was part of
the plan. The characters didn't matter beyond their ability
to shock and appall and deliver the gore. This was a "Can you
top this?" epistle, a book that celebrates the school of "no
redeeming characteristics" fiction.
I found the book tiresome and after a
while, boring, for much the same reason I find TV shows of
auto accidents and Friday the 13th part levendeleven boring,
but Teran didn't stumble into or wander aimlessly through
this freak show. He knew exactly what he was doing, whom he
was lionizing and whom he hoped to piss off and offend.
