miker asked:

"I picked up a couple Fletch books, by Gregory MacDonald, I think. Are these books any good? I read the first page of one of them and it looked like a combination of tough and humorous. Can't hardly judge him by one page, . . ."

Well, the publisher (Avon?) certainly wanted you to judge the books by their first page, they printed it on the cover. Of course, it was one hell of a first page. I read it decades ago, but I still remember it, especially the last line, "I want you to kill me."

The first, Fletch, was great. Confess Fletch was still pretty good, but they kind of went downhill from there. The character stayed very enjoyable, but the plots seemed to get less important.
