Arguably, Upton Sinclair's THE JUNGLE. In related
nonfiction, I AM A FUGITIVE FROM A CHAIN GANG. But other
examples are eluding me at the moment.
******** I liked that book right up to the end where it
turned into a socialist lecture. I remember all the rat
poison they spread over the meat to kill the rats, and then
scooped it all into the vats to be processed into food. And
if I remember right, I think a guy got caught up and swept
into the processor, didn't he? Well, at least that meat was
fresh. I've been thinking about rereading it. It's been a
long time.
