Richard Price may just be one of the better American "guy"
novelists out there these days that nobody knows about.
The crime novels CLOCKERS and its sorta sequel, FREEDOMLAND,
are simply great books, with plenty of smart, hard-boiled
moments for anyone on this list. I can't wait to read
SAMARITAN .
And Price's sharp, unerring use of dialogue and music
throughout his career to bring a character, a mood, a
setting, to life just about has to have influenced Pelecanos.
If not, then these two guys fell out of the same tree. If you
like George, try Richard.
Other novels worth seeking out are his angry young man books
BLOODBROTHERS and THE WANDERERS (great flick, and the
soundtrack kicks ass!).
And he's also had a hand in some not-so-shabby screenplays:
RANSOM, CLOCKERS, KISS OF DEATH, SEA OF LOVE, THE COLOR OF
MONEY and THE WANDERERS.
