Ed, I think I mentioned this very thing last month. I also
found the romantic stargazing scene nauseating. Apparently
Burnett was extremely proud of how well he structured his
books, and I can see why. Despite everything I didn't like
(and there was plenty), it was still, as you say, a
well-paced, suspenseful and fun read.
