I thought from the title that Raoul Whitfield's DEATH IN A
BOWL (1930) was set in a football coliseum. Instead, it turns
out a murder is committed in the Hollywood Bowl during an
outdoor concert. Interesting plot and good characters in this
novel made it a fun read for me.
On page 131 (paperback ed., 1970), a dialogue snippet:
Bracker said: "You're hard-boiled, Jardinn."
The reference was interesting to me.
