For anyone who hasn't read "The Distance," highly
recommended. I'm about two-thirds of the way through. Set in
San Francisco of the late 40s, it offers a great portrait of
a boxing columnist who makes or breaks professional careers
in dirty gyms and dark gin joints. It's the kind of novel you
can smell.
