Great reviews, Karin. I read Homes's BUILD MY GALLOWS HIGH, and I thought it was well done. It's got a lot of the classic noir props. I can't seem to locate a DVD of the movie version, Out of the Past. I'll try and write a review before the month is out.

Interesting that Gardner knew the California desert. The high desert, like Joshua Tree, is really spectacular. Lower you go the hotter it gets.

I've got that beautiful four-novel collection of Brown's from Stewart Masters. I've sort of slipped into the Fifties, but when I finish Willeford's WILD WIVES, Brown is next.
