Frederic Brown: Carnival of Crime (anthology) (1940s)
I read about half the stories before having to return this to
the library, where it will be returned to the basement stacks
for underappreciated books.
O. Henry-type twists at the end, as promised. Straightforward
style, a variety of protagonists. I'd say hardboiled, but
definitely not grim.
