Good one Bill. Here's another entry in the "could be Ellroy" sweepstakes:

"He looked at the deep blue carpet. 'Go down,' he thought, 'Go deep down, beneath that gorgeous blue into the sweaty rubber that retains the smell of every shoe, every cigarette ash underneath, dive deep."

He was always doing that in his interior monologues: "Go down, dive deep".
