********** Darn it! I seen that book tonight at the bookstore. I remembered in your bibliography that you mentioned two books of collected stories that got you the lion's share of his works, but I couldn't remember the specifics. I almost bought it anyway, but then I seen that it had some weird version of THE THIN MAN in it, and I've got the plain vanilla version and I'm not interested in another one, and I figured a novel in a work of collected stories would take up a big chunk of real estate in the book.

I wandered into a second-hand store in town tonight and looked at the books and was amazed at the total lack of hardly any mysteries, let alone hardboiled, but then my eyes caught AN UNFINISHED WOMAN. I thought, "Hmm, the only women I know are unsatisfied." I looked a little closer and noticed it's Lillian Hellman's memoirs. I bought it for 69 cents, plus tax. Maybe I'll find out who she was fucking while Hammett was doing his buddy Raoul's wife.
