RARA-AVIS: South African hardboiled

Been meaning to ask the list this question since I stumbled across the South African Police Services website and got scared (if those are the official statistics...) Apart from James McClure, is anybody familiar with any noir/hardboiled South African writers?

For anyone else who's interested in such matters statistics are available at: http://www.saps.org.za/8_crimeinfo/200112/report.htm

Among other things, they favourably compare Pretoria's murder rate (41.12 per 100000) with that of Washington, DC (69.34), only to let slip a few lines later that Johannesburg's is 136.3.

And the following includes a euphemism of the highest quality:
"Crime mapping (crime pattern analysis) at most police stations in South Africa also reveals that wherever bottle stores, bars/pubs, taverns and shebeens are found there is a tendency for excessive use of alcohol, brawls
(assaults) and fights which go wrong (murders) to occur."
