This World Then the fireworks is pretty faithful to the
partially completed novel. Not one of Jim Thompson's better
works (although I do like his description of a cemetary as
"the city of wonderful people"). Also not one of the better
Jim Thompson movies. My favorite Thompson movie: Coupe de
Torchon (Pop. 1280). It's a terrific movie. Even though they
move the setting from Texas to a french province in Africa,
it captures the book. And talking of movies, it's a shame
neither "The Getaway" had the guts to use Thompson's
brilliant apocalyptic ending.

Isn't that the one in Gorman's SECOND BLACK LIZARD ANTHOLOGY
OF CRIME FICTION? Rather liked it, if so (the novel, that is;
the film way too much a Billy Zane vanity project, too timid
in dealing with Thompson's usual themes). TM

John Lau comments on the stunning color cinematography of
Thompson's _This world, then..._. That's by Bill Pope, a
master photographer. The movie is so-so, but the photography
is art. Come to think of it, the Thompson novel is pretty
bad. Let's not blame the screenwriter.
