RARA-AVIS: Leonard's Pagan Babies

Yesterday, I don't know why, I felt the compulsion to read some Elmore Leonard, so I picked up his _Pagan Babies_ at the local library. It starts with one of the strongest first paragraphs I've read in a long time; I figured that, after that opening volley, he would have to deliver, and he does. I couldn't put the thing down.

Objectively, it's a disturbing book. The comedy is there, but it doesn't weaken the tension. The book is short and could be a Gold Medal, in which case we would be including it among the best ones from that era. I give it my highest recommendation.

We haven't had an Elmore Leonard month, have we? There are thirty-seven novels and a bunch of stories...

Regards,

MrT
