RARA-AVIS: Hegwood book

I read the first Martin Hegwood book, _Big Easy Backroad_, and felt like he was trying to ape James Lee Burke too much, and not really succeeding. At the same time, I also picked up his second book, which is still waiting in my TBR pile. Does anyone know if it's any better?
