RARA-AVIS: china lake

i don't think i've ever seen anthony hyde's name or books mentioned here. i had read his _china lake_ many years ago, and seeing it for sale at a used book store here re- cently made me think of it again.

the book has got some excellent hardboiled scenes in it. in one of them jack tannis, a retired naval officer, does nothing more than kill a rattlesnake at a woman's trailer, but there is a roiling undercurrent of violence and tension in the scene that is stunningly well-written.

the ending has a great twist to it.
